The National Electrical Code is the world's most widely used building code. It is adopted for regulatory use in all 50 states and more than 42,000 local jurisdictions, which makes it, for all practical purposes, our U.S. national wiring rules.
The Code is also an important international safety standard. Mexico first adopted the National Electrical Code as its national wiring rules in 1994. Since then, use of the National Electrical Code around the world has grown rapidly. Today, the National Electrical Code is translated into four different languages and used in many nations that circle the globe. In recognition of this growing worldwide acceptance, the National Electrical Code is identified on its front cover as an international standard.
The National Electrical Code is the best-known safety standard published by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), but it is not the only one. NFPA publishes about 300 technical standards and codes intended to help reduce loss of life and property due to fire and other hazards.
About this Book
User's Guide to the National Electrical Code is intended as a tool to help Code users better understand the purpose, structure, and organization of the 2008 National Electrical Code. Readers of this book will gain an improved understanding of the 2008 National Electrical Code and how to use it. To develop more complete knowledge of the Code, readers can use this book together with the 2008 National Electrical Code Handbook, published by NFPA. The two books are intended to complement each other.
The Handbook contains the complete text of the Code and provides a section-by-section, sometimes line-by-line, explanation of key Code requirements. As a detail-level reference for 2008 National Electrical Code requirements, it is not intended to explain overall Code structure and organization or the interrelationships between different chapters and articles.
This User's Guide provides an overview of 2008 National Electrical Code structure and organization. Rather than concentrating on individual requirements, it explains the technical content of each Code chapter in terms of its parts and articles. The User's Guide also explains the following:
- The intent behind various important 2008 National Electrical Code requirements.
- How the 2008 National Electrical Code relates to, and is used together with, other NFPA electrical standards and building codes.
- 2008 National Electrical Code consensus development procedures, including regular updates at three-year intervals, Tentative Interim Amendments (TIAs), and Formal Interpretations.
