These Uniform Codes are published by the International Conference of Building Officials and consist of the Uniform Building Code and Uniform Mechanical Code (1997 and earlier editions). To help you better understand the provisions of the Uniform Building Code, the International Conference of Building Officials (ICBO) has published workbooks and handbooks, including the Seismic Design Manuals (a three-volume series), the 1997 UBC Code Companion (a study guide to help you become familiar with the code), and numerous other specialty guides. We also have tabs available, which can help you locate the most often used sections of the Uniform Building Code quickly and easily.

The 1997 Uniform Building Code includes metric equivalents. Metric equivalent formulas follow the English formula and are denoted by "For SI:" preceding the metric equivalent. Those formulas that do not use dimensions are not provided with a metric equivalent. Multiplying conversion factors have been provided for formulas where metric forms were unavailable. Tables are provided with multiplying conversion factors in subheadings for each tabulated unit of measurement.

The last edition of the Uniform Building Code was published in 1997. Following that edition, the International Conference of Building Officials (ICBO) joined with Building Officials and Code Administrators International (BOCA), and Southern Building Code Congress International (SBCCI) to publish the International Codes. The first edition of the International Building Code was published in 2000, and was updated again in 2003 and 2006. These three organizations are now known as the International Code Council.
