Description
Photovoltaic solar systems are being installed throughout the U.S. in states like California (where it must have 20% renewable energy by 2010), Florida, New Jersey, New York and many other states where financial incentives are available. The solar business is booming!
Solar power systems are rapidly growing over 30% per year segment of the residential and commercial electrical systems market.
The Solar Photovoltaic Workbook will take you from start to finish in designing and calculating the equipment and wire sizes. The book includes a 60-question installers exam with answers. Several states now require this exam.
Features:
Identifying the components
Mechanical considerations
Installing the modules and arrays
System configurations
Battery principles
Inverters, charge controllers
Sizing calculations in depth
Conductor ampacities
System voltage drop
Grounding
Wiring methods
The sun irradiance
Utility interconnection
Adapting the electrical design
A walk thru Article 690
Summary with exam
60 question installer exam with answers
From the Preface
As I write today it is becoming difficult to find a qualified PV solar system installer in some areas of the country, as their installation may be hindered by limited knowledge of PV systems and the requirements among local utilities and the electrical inspector's enforcement of Article 690 of the National Electrical Code.
The PV environment is tough with wide ranging outdoor temperatures and moisture. Equipment must be listed for the application.
The expected long life of the PV system is over 40 years in the heat and cold points to the need for durable hardware and high levels of quality workmanship.
The PV installer needs to devote significant attention to the weather-related (wind, sleet, snow, ice and rain) requirements for PV systems to help ensure long-lived, hazard-free electrical installations.
The process of calculating wire sizes for PV systems is somewhat complex with the weather and temperature factors involved.
The electrical equipment used and the workmanship on most residential PV systems will in general resemble the electrical equipment and wiring methods used on a commercial installation as generally there will be surface mounted equipment and exposed conduits. The experienced electrician has the best qualifications for installing a solar PV system.
The system should be installed using only the highest quality system components that are listed for the application with the highest standards of workmanship, typically commercial electrical system levels of craftsmanship.
PV systems are a mature, but evolving technology. While seasoned PV installers are meeting Code requirements, there is a continual influx of new equipment and new, inexperienced installers. Installers must keep up with the new equipment installation requirements while remaining vigilant for the mistakes that will inevitably continue to plague future installations.
Photovoltaic systems require wiring methods not normally found in residential or commercial electrical systems. Installers should not only be familiar with the Code rules to PV systems but also the Code rules to electrical systems in general and a solid working knowledge of electrical systems.
To be a qualified person, he or she must be familiar with much more than the construction and operation of electrical equipment. A qualified person knows about electrical hazards, exposure to them, and how to avoid that exposure. However, perhaps the most important information is that each person understands the limits of his or her abilities. Each person must be able to recognize when to step back and ask for help.
If a man is without education . . . he lives within the narrow, dark and grimy walls of ignorance. He is a poor prisoner without hope. The little light that he gets comes to him as through dark corridors and grated windows. To deny education to any people is one of the greatest crimes against human nature. The man who collects knowledge without passing it on to others is like a fruit tree in the desert.
