If you're a homeowner, contractor, or do-it-yourselfer that has ever needed to navigate a home project through code compliance, permits, and the inspection process, but felt intimidated by the complexity of it all, your resource is here.

The Building Process Simplified is the ultimate resource for any homeowner, contractor, or do-it-yourselfer that has ever needed to navigate through code compliance, permits, and the inspection process, but felt intimidated by the complexity of it all. This book is a straightforward, no-nonsense guide with an abundance of practical examples that clarify otherwise complicated code articles and approved processes. Coverage spans a broad range of topics, from code compliance and permits to the court process, zoning issues, and working effectively with building officials, making this a well-rounded, valuable resource for anyone seeking a more in-depth understanding of the administrative processes involved in building or renovating a home.
  • Clear, straightforward language avoids heavy use of technical terminology, allowing readers of all backgrounds to benefit from the content covered.
  • Step-by-step coverage of permit process gives homeowners a more solid understanding of what steps the contractor must complete.
  • Emphasis on the person-to-person negotiation and human relations aspects takes the discussion one step further, offering coverage not commonly seen in similar books on the market but critical for ensuring a smooth building project and process.
From the Introduction
The last thing anyone planning to build or renovate a home or other structure wants to think about during the planning process is local government regulation. If you are a contractor, your focus is on getting the job, obtaining plans, and lining up the subcontractors to do the work. If you are hiring someone to do the work for you, your energy is focused on obtaining estimates, finding the best builder for the job, and getting financing for the project. Nobody wants to think about building codes, permits, inspections, or certificates of occupancy.

Unfortunately, ignorance is not bliss when it involves ignoring building codes and other laws of the local jurisdiction. The consequences of ignoring local regulations may include fines, a delay in completing the project, hazardous conditions on the property, an inability to use the building, and difficulties when it comes time to sell the property.

Experienced builders understand the necessity of complying with the many laws that govern the building process. Unfortunately, too many people believe that if they just ignore the laws requiring permits and inspections, nothing will happen. They do so at their peril.
