Description
For over sixty years, the primary source for design of concrete structures - now revised and updated.
Simplified Design of Concrete Structures, 8th Edition, covers all the latest, commonly used concrete systems, practices, and research in the field, reinforced with examples of practical designs and general building structural systems. Updated to conform to current building codes, design practices, and industry standards.
Simplified Design of Concrete Structures, Eighth Edition is a reliable, easy-to-use handbook that examines a wide range of concrete structures, building types, and construction details. It includes a wealth of illustrations, expanded text examples, exercise problems, and a helpful glossary. Highlights of this outstanding tool include:
Its use of the current American Concrete Institute Building Code for 2005 (ACI 318) and the Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) method of structural design.
Fundamental and real-world coverage of concrete structures that assumes no previous experience.
Valuable study aids such as exercise problems, questions, and word lists enhance usability.
Preface to the Eighth Edition
Publication of this book presents an opportunity for yet another generation of students of building design to access the subject of concrete structures. The particular focus of this work is a concentration on widely used, simple, and ordinary methods of construction. In addition, the effort has been made to keep mathematical work at a low level, in order to emphasize the accessibility of the work to untrained persons.
The basic purpose of this "simplified" work is well expressed in the preface to the first edition by the originator of the simplified series of books, the late Professor Harry Parker of the University of Pennsylvania. Excerpts from Professor Parker's preface to the first edition follow this preface. To the extent possible we have adhered to the spirit expressed by Professor Parker.
Of course, structural engineering is no longer really simple. Utilization of all of the available resources for investigation and design of structures is a complex and exhaustive task. Professional engineers must climb this notable learning curve in pursuit of credibility as professionals. We do not mean to belittle the work of serious engineers by our simplified approach. Still, practical means for construction and the use of very ordinary structural products provide the resource for the vast amount of building construction - even in the computer age. It is possible, therefore, to present real structural solutions for ordinary structural tasks with a minimum of complexity. And it is also possible to present the design process for these solutions in relatively elementary form.
Readers of this book should obtain a useful overview of the field of concrete structures and of the means for their design. Those wishing to pursue the study to more advanced levels can find many publications and educational opportunities for their study. For many, seeking mostly only a general view of the topic and an understanding of basic design processes, this book may suffice well.
This topic is supported by an amazing archive of reference materials, including publications and computer programs. We have used a few essential sources for this work, a primary one being the ACI Code, published by the American Concrete Institute. To the extent possible, the work presented here conforms to the specifications of the latest edition of that work. We are grateful to the ACI for permission to use some materials from the code for this work.
Preface to the First Edition
(The following is an excerpt from Professor Parker's preface to the first edition.)
The preparation of this book has been prompted by the fact that many young men desirous of the ability to design elementary reinforced concrete structural members have been deprived of the usual preliminary training. The author has endeavored to simplify the subject matter for those having a minimum of preparation. Throughout the text will be found references to Section 1 of Simplified Engineering for Architects and Builders. Familiarity with this brief treatment of the principles of mechanics is sufficient. Any textbook on mechanics will give the desired information. This particular book has been referred to as a convenience in having a direct reference. With these basic principles, and a high school knowledge of algebra, no other preparation is needed.
In preparing material for this book, the author has had in mind its use as a textbook as well as a book to be used for home study. Simple, concise explanations of the design of the most common structural elements have been given rather than discussions of the more involved problems. In addition to the usual design formulas sufficient theory underlying the principles of design is presented, in developing basic formulas, to ensure the student a thorough knowledge of the fundamentals involved.
A major portion of the book contains illustrative examples giving the solution of the design of structural members. Accompanying the examples are problems to be solved by the student.
The author has made no attempt to offer short-cuts or originality in design. Instead, he has endeavored to present clearly and concisely the present day methods commonly used in the design of reinforced concrete members. A thorough knowledge of the principles herein set forth should encourage the student and serve as adequate preparation for advanced study.
