Description

The National Electrical Code is the most widely recognized and accepted electrical standard in the world. Every three years the National Electrical Code is updated to reflect the newest installation practices utilized by the electrical industry, bringing about hundreds of changes to the code. The 2008 edition of Significant Changes to the National Electrical Code aims to identify and analyze those changes in a way that cuts through the maze of jargon to hone in on key updates that will affect electrical installations.

For maximum comprehension, Significant Changes to the National Electrical Code is arranged to follow the general layout of the 2008 National Electrical Code. Each change is also accompanied by an illustration, as well as background information and a discussion of the significance of the change. As the most comprehensive code change book on the market, Significant Changes to the National Electrical Code will prove invaluable to electricians, electrical contractors, electrical inspectors, electrical engineers, and anyone who needs to understand the most important updates in the 2008 National Electrical Code.

Features:
  • State-of-the-art diagrams and photographs that clearly illustrate important changes.
  • Actual text from the code is included to show how the changes are incorporated, with strikethroughs for deleted information and underlines of new information to highlight the changes.
  • Authored by a well-respected code expert who is directly involved in the code-making process so you can feel confident you are getting information and analysis from top sources.
From the Introduction
The National Electrical Code is in a state of constant change; it is a living document. The revision cycle of the National Electrical Code never ends. As you begin to read and understand changes to the new 2008 edition, technical committee task groups and individual members are already preparing proposals to develop the 2011 edition. The National Electrical Code is the most widely used electrical installation standard in the world. It is adopted throughout the United States and is used daily by electricians, contractors, maintainers, inspectors, engineers, and designers. The constant state of change and the three-year revision cycle are necessary to achieve the purpose of the National Electrical Code: "the practical safeguarding of persons and property from hazards arising from the use of electricity."

The revision process of the National Electrical Code begins with the proposal stage. Anyone can submit a proposal to change the National Electrical Code. The code-making panels (CMPs) meet to deliberate on the submitted proposals. The results are printed and distributed in the report on proposals (ROP) and a draft copy of the National Electrical Code with the ROP changes is also developed. The second stage is the comment stage. Anyone can submit a comment to revise an action taken in the ROP stage. The CMPs meet to deliberate on all submitted comments and the results are printed in the report on comments (ROC). The technical correlating committee has oversight during both the ROP and ROC stages to prevent conflicting actions between CMPs. The next step is at the NFPA annual ROC stages. The final action is a meeting of the standards council. Any appeals made to the council are considered and the new edition of the National Electrical Code is then final and sent to the printer.

In the front of your National Electrical Code after the table of contents, all of the technical committees, or code-making panels, are listed with each member's name and classifications. As you review these changes and continue to use the National Electrical Code, get involved in the revision process by sending in proposals to revise future editions of the National Electrical Code.
