This 3rd edition of Seismic and Wind Forces: Structural Design Examples by Alan Williams is now updated to the 2006 International Building Code, ASCE 7-05, ACI 318-05 and ACI 530-05.
This publication facilitates the transition of designers, teachers, building officials, and code users to the 2006 International Building Code and aids with code compliance.
The text is organized into six chapters corresponding to the primary structural design sections of the code:
- Seismic design
- Design for wind loads
- Seismic design of steel structures
- Seismic design of concrete structures
- Seismic design of wood structures
- Seismic design masonry structures
In each chapter, sections of the code are presented, analyzed and explained in a logical and simple manner and are followed by illustrative examples. Each example concentrates on a specific section of the code and provides a clear and concise interpretation of the issue.
Seismic and Wind Forces: Structural Design Examples, 3rd Edition, provides a comprehensive guide and desk reference for the application of the 2006 International Building Code and cites extensive reference publications that reflect current design practice.
Chapter 16 of the International Building Code deals with structural design loads. These provisions are derived from ASCE 7 and the NEHRP provisions. In this text, seismic design loads are covered in Chapter 1, and wind design loads are covered in Chapter 2.
Chapter 22 of the International Building Code deals with the seismic design of steel structures and is based on the AISC seismic provisions. In Chapter 3 of this text, these requirements have been supplemented by the FEMA provisions for steel moment frames.
Seismic design of concrete structures is covered in Chapter 19 of the International Building Code and Chapter 4 of this text. These provisions are derived from the ACI building code.
Seismic design of wood structures is covered in Chapter 23 of the International Building Code and Chapter 5 of this text. These requirements are derived from the NEHRP provisions and the NDS code.
Seismic design of masonry structures is dealt with in Chapter 21 of the International Building Code. These provisions are derived from both the BCRMS code and the NEHRP provisions. Chapter 6 of this text covers these requirements.
