From the Preface
When I started in the construction industry, security, sound and video work were very small specialties. In those days, finding someone to perform installations was difficult. Now it is a broad and growing industry. More than that, it is getting ever more complex, merging with other technologies, and spreading into new areas. So, I thought it was high time for security, sound and video installers to have a practical handbook of their own.
This book contains the essential information you need for actually installing, repairing and maintaining security systems, audio (sound) systems, and video systems, such as formulas, technical data and terms. In addition, I have included information on the technologies that these systems must now interact with, such as fiber optics.
You will also find that I have covered the base technologies that security, sound and video systems are built upon - electronics and communications. In this book you will find not only the basic formulas and symbols for these technologies, but also the installation requirements for communication systems, which have been, over the years, extended to apply to security, sound and video installations as well.
Naturally, there may be some aspects of this work that I have overlooked or have not covered in sufficient depth for some readers. I will attempt to include material suggested by readers and to keep pace with developments in the trade by updating this book on a regular basis.
