The book brings together key information from scores of publications and reports - from leading associations, institutes and other recognized authorities . . . plus updated national building code requirements.

Includes new coverage of Green Building, Seismic, Hurricane and Mold-Resistant Construction.

From the Preface
This book began with a group of California construction defect analysts who, in the course of their work in claims litigation, collected a tremendous amount of data to help define construction quality standards. Their ongoing efforts to compile and maintain a current library of information from a range of authoritative sources convinced them that having this kind of data collected in one convenient resource would be a boon not only to defect analysts and insurance personnel, but for contractors and subcontractors, engineers, architects, and owners. Having quick access to reliable standards would enable users to answer questions directly and avoid costly errors, delays, and disputes. The result is fewer sources of conflict among all the parties involved in a project, and a much better chance for a job that meets code, quality, and schedule expectations.

At the National Association of Home Builders 1997 Builders Show, a group of contractors, leaders in their industry and within NAHB, first came together to help outline the book's contents. These individuals, listed in "Acknowledgments" and "About the Editors," provided the direction the book needed to ensure its usefulness to contractors and other members of the project team. Some of these NAHB members, many of them Trustees of the Commercial Builders Council, went on to play a major role in the book's development as editors. RS Means editors brought their own practical experience as contractors and engineers to this project and directed and organized much of the research.

This third edition of Residential and Light Commercial Construction Standards has been updated over the years to the latest building codes and standards. It also includes new material from green building practices for nearly all areas of construction, to earthquake and hurricane construction. The Introduction explains these new features and how to find the information you need in the various parts of the book. It also includes some examples of common problems this book can solve.
