From the Foreword
The first conversation I ever had with Russ Gehrke went a little like this: "Hi, the name's Gehrke and I can build you a hearse that can use trash as a fuel," to which I replied, "Great, but can you build me a car that can run on food?" He replied, "Oh yeah, that's easy - what type of food, crawfish?" and then we both cracked up laughing.
Russ, the big friendly fella from Missouri, was the cause of both much amazement and laughter when it came to gearing me up with vehicles for a TV series titled Coolfuel.
He created a car that ran on donuts, orange peels, and dog food, and then a stretch limo powered by food, biodiesel, and ethanol, with solar power and a fuel cell just to give it some extra kick!
Having trawled the eco world for fifteen years, for every imaginable product or method that is both sustainable and fun, my first port of call is now my big-hearted mate from the States, Russ. He is both genius and nuts. Nuts because he will give anything a go, and genius because he can make the nutty ideas a reality.
In this book, Russ invites us into his super-sized world of eco-creativity and delivers an achievable "I can do this" approach to everyday living. Whatever shade of green you live your life in - lime green, dark green, olive green, or virgin green - Russ opens the door for us all to explore the possibilities in front of us.
Russel J. Gehrke, you are an inspiration, and if I ever want a vehicle to run on ferret poo, I'll come knocking again. Thanks for writing this book.
