Description

Quick-Reference Guide to Fire Safety assembles construction types, fire barriers, allowable areas, story limitations, fire walls, roof coverings and occupancy requirements of the 2006 International Building Code by occupancy group and division. This publication presents these important requirements in a consistent format for each of the 26 occupancy classifications identified in the IBC, providing for a quick review of the fundamental requirements. A table is devoted to each occupancy, addressing building size, interior and exterior fire-resistance and fire protection systems. Numerous references are provided to link the information directly to the provisions of the code.

From the Foreword
This extensively revised publication assembles requirements and references for a variety of fire safety topics addressed in the 2006 International Building Code into logical groupings by occupancy classification. The information focuses on three primary considerations in the design and construction of buildings under the 2006 IBC: fire resistance, interior finishes and fire protection systems. Presented in a tabular format for each individual occupancy group, the following general areas are addressed:
  • Building size/type of construction, including allowable heights and areas.
  • Exterior protection, including exterior walls, roof construction and roof coverings.
  • Interior protection, including wall, floor and structural frame protection.
  • Shaft enclosures.
  • Interior wall and ceiling finishes.
  • Separated occupancies in mixed-occupancy buildings.
  • Exterior wall openings/fire separation distance.
  • Automatic sprinkler systems.
  • Fire alarm systems.
  • Special height and area allowances.
Accompanying each table is a series of notes pertaining to the specific requirements. Many of the notes are general in nature, as their applications are appropriate to all occupancy groups. Some notes are very specific to the occupancy under consideration, allowing for a very comprehensive listing of the fire safety requirements. The notes are keyed to tabulated requirements by superscripts used throughout the tables, providing an opportunity for the impact of each note to be evaluated.

It is important to recognize that this guide does not identify all of the requirements set forth in the code. A full examination of the 2006 IBC will be necessary to determine all of the code provisions that are applicable. Building and fire officials, plan reviewers, design professionals and other users of the IBC will undoubtedly use the compilation in different ways. It is hoped that all users of the guide will be assisted in quickly identifying the fundamental fire safety code requirements that apply to a particular projects.
