    An Overview
The purpose of this book is to provide candidates for the electrical contractor's license a study tool in their preparation for the exam. Most states require that an electrician be licensed in order to install electrical service. This means that an examination must be passed in order to obtain a State license. Most of the exam contains both electrical sections as well as business law sections. This book is divided into several chapters and covers both the electrical portion as well as the business law portion.

Readers of this book are provided some reference material and explanations of certain topics. The book works in conjunction with the National Electrical Code and the Employer's Tax Guide. Numerous example problems will be performed step by step with a full explanation of each component of the problem. Multiple-choice questions will then follow each subject with the answers provided in the back of the text. Finally, the reader will have the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge with practice exams that closely imitate actual exam conditions. A complete answer key is provided in the appendix with detailed explanations of each solution.

This book attempts to simulate questions that resemble the test questions encountered on a state exam. Much of the book is dedicated to performing calculation-type questions; however, most exams contain both calculation questions and short answer-type questions. The overall objective of this book is to demonstrate how to properly use the National Electrical Code in an exam setting. The final chapter of the book provides an opportunity for the reader to practice with multiple-choice questions which would simulate most exams.

    How to Use this Book
The key to passing any exam or test is to be well prepared. Most people are not blessed with a photographic memory so there is some work involved in being successful on an exam. This book is laid out in such a way that it allows the reader to digest the material one section at a time. The best way to utilize this book is to develop a good knowledge of one chapter before moving on to the next since some of the information is sequential. You will notice that each chapter begins with a brief overview of what is covered followed by the chapter objectives. You will also notice that most of the chapters contain Key Codes. These Key Codes are helpful in quickly locating what sections of the National Electrical Code will be used within the specific chapter. This book is designed to work in conjunction with the National Electrical Code so have a copy handy when you begin to use this book. Also be sure to have a reliable calculator on hand for the calculation portions, as well as pencils, pens, and highlighters. Find a quiet place to study where there will be few or no distractions. Study aids like this book are the most beneficial when you take your time preparing and are not trying to cram in too much information in just a few days. In order to get the most out of this book, view it as not only readable information but also as an interactive workbook.

    Note to the Reader
Note that not all state electrical license exams are the same and may cover a wide range of material. This book attempts to make the reader aware of some of the most popular material that may be covered on any exam pertaining to the National Electrical Code. In order to ensure accuracy, the reader should obtain all the available information that pertains to the state in which the exam is being taken.
