From the Preface
This sixth edition of the National Fuel Gas Code Handbook continues the work begun in 1988 to help users of the National Fuel Gas Code to understand and use the code more easily. The code must be written using a technically clear, usable, and enforceable style suitable for adoption into law. This handbook provides commentary that brings the legalistic language of the code to life.
This handbook has grown considerably since its first edition, published in 1988. New material in the code accounts for part of this growth, but most of the increase comes from added commentary, revised supplements, and calculation worksheets that are intended to be reproduced and used.
The purpose of this handbook is to assist enforcers or users of the National Fuel Gas Code in installing gas piping, gas appliances and venting for gas appliances.
The 2006 edition of the code contains several important changes, including the following:
- Chapter Numbering. Chapters containing sizing tables are relocated to provide contiguous sections covering piping, appliance and equipment installation, and venting.
- Relocation of Pipe Sizing Tables. Pipe sizing tables are relocated to Chapter 6 and reorganized with all natural gas tables in Section 6.2 and all propane tables in Section 6.3. The tables are extended to cover steel, copper, and high pressure polyethylene pipe lengths up to 2,000 feet and low pressure polyethylene to 500 feet. CSST lengths are not changed. This change provides information needed by many piping system installers. In addition, all table values are rounded to three significant digits, and entries smaller than 10 ft3/hr natural gas and 10,000Btu/hr are rounded down to zero to remove essentially useless entries from the tables.
- Alternate Locations Provided. A new option provides alternate locations for appliance shutoff valves. Where manifold piping systems are used, and all shutoff valves are at the manifold, the valves can be up to 50 feet from the appliance served.
- New Material. A new section on installation of appliances in attics provides requirements for entryway size, length of travel path and ceiling height, flooring, lighting, and a requirement for an electrical outlet to ensure access for service and appliance replacement.
- Reorganization of Definitions. The definitions in Chapter 3 have been reordered and reorganized by category. The definitions of "Appliance" and "Equipment" have been revised. An appliance is any device that utilizes gas as a fuel or raw material to produce light, heat, power, refrigeration, or air conditioning; equipment is devices other than appliances; and the term "Gas Utilization Equipment" is discontinued. The use of the terms has been correspondingly adjusted throughout the code.

About the Author:
After graduating from the City College of New York with a Bachelor of Engineering (Chemical) degree, Theodore C. Lemoff was employed in the chemical and petrochemical industry by Proctor and Gamble Company, Sun Chemical Corporation, and Badger Engineers Inc. in various engineering positions. He joined NFPA in 1985 and currently serves as NFPA's principal gases engineer. NFPA staff liaison to the National Fuel Gas Code Committee, he is also responsible for other NFPA standards on flammable gases. Lemoff represents NFPA on the ASME Code for Pressure Piping Committee (National Interest Review Group) (B31), the pipeline safety advisory committee of the U.S. Department of Transportation, and the IAPMO Mechanical and Plumbing Code Committees. Lemoff is a registered professional engineer in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and is a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and the Society of Fire Protection Engineers, the Society of Gas Engineers, and the International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials. |
