Description

Montreal: A Guide to Recent Architecture is designed to encourage both architects and non-architects to seek out new work in a city with a rich heritage. The 100 projects described and illustrated in this miniature book date back to 1983 and form a selection representing the broadest possible range of architectural production in Montreal. Buildings are treated here as cultural artefacts, inextricably associated with the people they serve: the texts and conversations which accompany the projects are intended not so much to describe the structures themselves, but rather to give an idea of the circumstances under which architecture is made in this city. Building in the special political and climatic circumstances of Montreal - a city with a history of engagement with contemporary debate on architecture and urbanism, and with vocal community and special-interest groups - has produced innovation both in new work and restoration. The city reveals the beginnings of some brave new architecture.
