Description

A valuable addition to the popular Residential Construction Academy series, Masonry, Brick and Block Construction introduces and explains modern residential masonry construction procedures, as well as current building and construction industry safety regulations relevant to the field. Beginning masons, designers, homebuilders, students, and apprentices alike will benefit from the clear diagrams and step-by-step procedures. With technical information from nationally recognized trade associations like the National Association of Home Builders, Masonry Brick and Block Construction is a "must-have" for the aspiring mason.

Features:
  • An English and Spanish glossary is included.
  • The Home Builders Institute (HBI) skill standards drive this book, focusing coverage on the core topics for masonry.
  • Detailed illustrations clearly spell out procedures, instead of simply explaining them, so readers can learn and replicate important skills with ease.
  • Self-assessments and lab activities offer reinforcements of key concepts.
  • Factual information from the International Residential Code is incorporated where applicable so readers are getting the most accurate, most reliable information available to the industry.
About this Book
A home is an essential part of life. It provides protection, security, and privacy to its occupants. It is often viewed as the single most important thing a family can own. This book is written for students who want to learn how to become brickmasons or bricklayers, targeting the residential construction market where typically concrete masonry units are used for foundation walls and anchored brick veneer is used for exterior wall facades.

Masonry, Brick and Block Construction covers different types of brick and brick pattern bonds, different types of concrete masonry units and architectural concrete masonry units; building brick and block leads; laying brick and block to the line; residential foundations; anchored brick veneer facades; fireplaces and chimneys; brick paving, porches, and steps; brick arches, brick piers, columns, pilasters, and chases; composite and cavity wall construction; estimating materials and labor; cleaning new masonry; safety for masons; working drawings and specifications; and career opportunities. Masonry practices that are commonly used in today's residential construction market are discussed in detail and presented in a way that not only tells you what needs to be done but also shows you how to do it. General and task-specific safety issues are addressed throughout the textbook, as well as in a special chapter devoted exclusively to safety and OSHA requirements.

This textbook provides a valuable resource for the knowledge and skills required of an entry-level mason, although those actively involved in the industry will also benefit from the material covered. The basic "hands-on" skills as well as the procedures outlined in this book will help individuals gain proficiency in this trade.

Organization
This book is organized so that those new to the industry as well as those already working in the field can gain maximum benefit from its content. The four main sections of the book cover the major aspects of the masonry industry as they affect residential construction:
  • Materials, Products, Tools, and Equipment
  • Basic Brick and Block Laying Procedures
  • Procedures for Residential Masonry Construction
  • Safety Training and Career Opportunities
