This abridged version of Manual J, 8th Edition, provides complete instructions for estimating heat loss and heat gain for residential structures. This abridged edition of Manual J is sufficient for learning the Manual J procedures and for undertaking hand calculations on a varied number of home applications.
Included in this abridged edition of Manual J (MJ8AE):
- Section 1. Provides a general introduction to the types of heating and cooling loads.
- Section 2. Focuses on MJ8AE protocols for producing accurate load calculations.
- Section 3. Addresses issues/concepts related to design conditions, load evaluation, and building construction.
- Section 4. Provides numerous examples for calculating component (i.e., wall, windows, ceilings, etc.) heat loss.
- Section 5. Provides numerous examples for calculating heat gain.
- Section 6. Provides guidance for using Form J1AE and J1AE worksheets.
- Sections 7 through 9. Provide detailed examples that demonstrate the procedure presented in the preceding sections.
- Section 10. Lists the subsequent steps in the design procedure (after the loads are determined).
- Tables. Provide all building performance information needed for MJ8AE heat loss and heat gain estimates.
-
- Appendices. Provide information needed to use and understand Manual J procedures.
Appendix 1 provides general study plans for MJ8AE. Select a course of study that is compatible with the background and experience of the student.
Note: New homes, homes that have had significant performance upgrades/modifications, or homes that have non-standard design elements (i.e., NFRC labeled glass, large glass areas, multi-zone systems, sunrooms, atriums, excessive internal loads, heat recovery systems, etc.) should use the comprehensive procedures of the unabridged version of Manual J, 8th Edition.
