Low Pressure Boilers, the industry leader among boiler operation texts, has been enhanced with new coverage of personal protective equipment, burner control systems, steam principles, and emission analysis and control. An updated "Cooling Systems" chapter covers refrigeration principles and equipment, chilled water systems, and refrigerant recovery procedures.

This full-color text is a must for operators of boiler systems used in hotels, apartment buildings, schools, and other large institutions. Boiler systems and related equipment are depicted in full-color illustrations complemented by concise text. This text is recommended by many licensing agencies for use as a study aid in preparing for licensing examinations. A sample licensing examination, with answers, is included to help learners prepare for an examination.

The interactive CD-ROM included with the book is a study aid with the following features:
  • Quick Quizzes that reinforce fundamental concepts, with 10 questions per chapter.
  • An Illustrated Glossary of industry terms, with links to video clips and animated graphics.
  • Flash Cards that enable a review of common boiler vocabulary terms.
  • Master Math Applications for those learners who wish to begin preparation for a more advanced license.
  • Sample Licensing Exams to help practice for a licensing examination.
  • Media Clips that depict boiler principles through video clips and animated graphics.
  • Access to ATPeResources.com, which provides a comprehensive array of instructional resources.
The Low Pressure Boilers Workbook, 3rd Edition, sold separately, contains questions similar to those found on a typical boiler operator's licensing exam.

From the Introduction
Low Pressure Boilers provides information on the safe and efficient operation of low pressure steam boilers and related equipment, hot water boilers, and cooling systems. The book can be used as a study guide for boiler operator licensing, an introduction to stationary engineering, or as a reference book for upgrading skills. The extensive illustrations show equipment details and sequential operating procedures for common boiler operator duties. Many photographs from leading equipment manufacturers are included to illustrate what a boiler operator may see on the job.

This new edition has been enhanced with new and expanded coverage of ASME boiler classifications, additive and subtractive pressure controls, pump principles, water pH, expansion and compression tanks, one-pipe and two-pipe hot water heating systems, relief valves and safety relief valves, electrical safety and NFPA 70E, and cooling system principles and components.

Energy efficiency and environmental issues are emphasized throughout with new material on condensing boilers, blowdown temperature control and heat recovery, blowdown procedures and cycles of concentration, heat exchanger principles, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), refrigerant management, and environmental concerns with refrigerants.

Factoids located throughout the book provide helpful information that enhances text content. Key Points identify fundamental concepts covered in the major sections of the chapter. Media Clip icons are placed on selected illustrations, indicating that a related video or animation is available on the CD-ROM that further illustrates the concepts developed in the illustration.

A new feature called Additional Activities is placed at the end of each chapter. This new feature directs the reader to related content on the textbook CD-ROM. The additional content provides supplemental information and practice using the information from the chapter. The additional content on the CD-ROM includes Quick Quizzes to help review material, Flash Cards to help learn the vocabulary of boiler operation, Media Clips that illustrate concepts from the text, and Sample Licensing Exams to help practice for a licensing examination. In addition, optional Master Math applications are included for learners who wish to begin preparation for a more advanced license.
