From the Introduction
"Production carpentry" often refers to the blazing-fast assembly of tract housing by specialized crews who are paid by piecework. To produce work at this pace, every step of the job must be planned in detail, and the on-site work must be approached systematically with the right tools and equipment. There's not a lot of time for head scratching, test cuts, mockups, or mistakes. With their emphasis on speed, however, production builders are often known more for their efficiency than for their quality of work.

Applying these same principles of efficiency to custom building is the focus of this book. The book's contributors are all successful custom builders who have pioneered ways to build at production speeds without sacrificing quality - thus combining the speed of the tract builder with the quality of the craftsman. This requires an even greater level of planning and organization, along with specialized tools, innovative materials, and the well-honed skills needed to put it all together on time and on budget. Some of the book's authors cut their teeth on the California tracts and later adapted their hard-won knowledge to the world of custom building and remodeling. Others, out of necessity, have devised their own innovative approaches to producing high-quality work at production speeds. In all cases, the best techniques come from the people in the trenches - the real experts on production.

The accomplishments of these authors clearly prove that the days of skilled craftsmanship are far from over. Granted, compared with previous generations of builders, much has certainly changed. New challenges are presented by declining lumber quality, unfamiliar composite materials, more stringent codes, and more demanding designs. But with each new generation of construction, new skills are mastered by an influx of talented, motivated craftspersons. Buildings must still be erected square and level, the framing must be accurate, the finish work must be precise, and everything must be designed and built to stand the test of time.

What stays the same from generation to generation is the commitment of builders to master the tools and materials of the day in order to efficiently produce durable, attractive, and affordable living spaces. That commitment to both quality and efficiency is the essence of production carpentry, as so clearly outlined here.

This book is written by veteran builders who have mastered the art of building fast and building well. It contains job-tested approaches to every phase of carpentry, from setting the sills to coping the crown moldings. You'll also learn about a host of innovative materials and techniques that enable contractors to produce custom details at affordable prices. Most important, because good planning is the key to success, you'll find the planning and prep work covered with the same attention to detail as the carpentry. We hope this collection of contractors' wisdom will help you continue to produce the best possible work on time and on budget, providing great value to your clients and a healthy bottom line for your company.
