The International Building Code features time-tested safety concepts, structural and fire- and life-safety provisions covering means of egress, interior finish requirements, comprehensive roof provisions, seismic engineering provisions, innovative construction technology, occupancy classifications, and the latest industry standards in material design. The International Building Code is founded on broad-based principles that make possible the use of new materials and new building designs.

The new 2003 International Building Code is part of a 14-code series published by the International Code Council. It is the result of their efforts to combine the three regional codes previously used in the United States into a single building code that can be adopted by jurisdictions across the country. This new International Building Code now replaces the Uniform Building Code, National Building Code and Standard Building Code. Other books in the series include the International Fire Code and the International Residential Code.

A new edition of this must-have reference is published every three years by the International Code Council. This book is kept is kept current by ICC's code change process.

Although changes are voted on - and a supplement published - annually, jurisdictions do not always adopt interim changes. Check with your local building department if you think you may need these revisions.
