Description

This workbook provides information on the requirements of the Hurricane Residential Construction Standard (SSTD-10) which provides pre-engineered prescriptive design and construction details with the purpose of improving the structural performance of residential buildings in hurricane-prone zones. Provides wind resistant designs and construction details for one- and two-story residential buildings of typical wood-framed construction and one-, two-, and three-story residential buildings of typical concrete or masonry construction sited in high wind regions.

From the Introduction
The most important step in the design and construction of a building is the determination of the types and magnitudes of natural hazards that will impact it during its lifetime. On much of the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic coastlines, hurricanes, with their associated high winds, storm surges, and large waves, are the natural hazard of greatest concern.

Once the hazard is identified, it is then necessary to establish design criteria for the building. To establish these criteria, some statistical analyses are necessary. In the case of hurricanes, many of the analyses have been made, including recurrence interval, wind velocities, storm surge, and wave heights.

Contents:
Chapter 1: Elements of Hurricanes; Introduction, Recurrence Interval, Winds, Storm Surge, Waves, Hurricane Scale, Coastal Construction Practices, Practice Exercise. Chapter 2: Basic Construction Terminology; Introduction, General Terminology, Wind Associated Terminology, Construction Systems, Foundations, Wood Frame Construction Components, Masonry Construction Components, Practice Exercise. Chapter 3: Distribution and Resistance of Wind Loads; Distribution of Loads, Roofs, Walls, Floors, Foundations, Resistance to Loads, Roof Coverings, Roof Systems Fasteners, Connectors, Openings, Masonry, Architectural Considerations, Practice Exercise. Chapter 4: Designing for Lateral Load Due to Wind; Introduction, Design for Wind Load on the Endwall, Design for Wind Load on the Sidewall, Practice Exercise. Chapter 5: Hurricane/Building Interaction; Introduction, Water, Wind, Combined Water and Wind Loading, Summary, Practice Exercise. Chapter 6: Flood-Resistant Construction Criteria; Introduction, Floodway, NFIP Zones A Requirements, NFIP Zone V Requirements, Foundations, Elevation Certificates, Substantial Improvement and Substantial Damage, Definition of NFIP Terms, Practice Exercise. Answers to Practice Exercises.
