From the Preface
This book covers complete technology starting from definitions to design, construction, installation, operation, maintenance, and inspection of all types of heating boilers. The book refers to the requirements of the American Society of Mechanical Engineer's (ASME) Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code applicable to heating boilers. The ASME Code Section IV describes rules for construction of heating boilers whereas ASME Section Code VI is recommended rules for the care and operation of heating boilers.

Heating boilers are low-pressure boilers used for steam heating, hot water heating, and domestic hot water supply. Approximately 80 percent of the total boilers in use are heating boilers and the remaining 20 percent are high-pressure boilers or power boilers. Perhaps every building you work or live in has a low-pressure boiler. Heating boilers are found in office buildings, residential buildings, apartment buildings, schools, universities, hospitals, nursing homes, day care centers, hotels, motels, and other locations where heating the building or hot water is required.

Low working pressure of heating boilers does not mean that it is not dangerous. Failure of any pressure parts or auxiliary systems of heating boilers can lead to severe explosion. In fact, heating boilers cause a higher number of accidents than are caused by the high-pressure boilers.

I am thankful to my friends, manufacturers, suppliers, repairers, installers, inspectors, insurance companies, and jurisdictions for providing valuable information for the book. Also, I am thankful to many websites from where I collected information on the latest technology. The information presented in this book is to educate the reader on heating boiler technology. I will consider my endeavor successful if the reader can apply information from the book to make any heating boilers safe, protecting human lives and property.
