Description

Achieve a solid understanding of the engineering and drafting tools that are the cornerstone of Autodesk Land Desktop 2005! This comprehensive reference and study guide takes readers step-by-step through key topics relevant to everyday design work, and features straightforward discussions of the command sequences and design tools needed for drafting, mapping, and analysis. Up-to-date coverage includes the latest applications LandXML, LandXML reporting, the new vertical editor, new point grouping options, and more. A companion CD-ROM offers support data and partially completed exercise files to help users move quickly through all exercises.

Special features included are:

  • The most comprehensive information on Land Desktop available, with interface changes that are covered as they appear to speed learning and help readers optimize mission-critical 2005 features and functions.
  • Exercises that employ real life data sets provide practice in terrain modeling, map creation, parcels, site grading, and more.
  • Includes practice problems that permit readers to learn about civil and/or survey techniques.
  • Examples of how to use the tools and commands are based on field examples that reinforce real-life applications.
From the Introduction
The Autodesk Land Desktop program is an extremely powerful drafting and designing tool. Land Desktop is a combination of the Softdesk Civil and Survey products into an industry specific market AutoCAD. Autodesk has distilled into Land Desktop the tools common to most daily tasks. These tasks include points, lines and arcs, parcels, alignments, labels and surfaces. An example of this distillation is what would have been six menus and two modules in the Softdesk products, is now the single Terrain menu of Land Desktop. Civil Design contains the tools for site grading, water runoff analysis and design, roadway design and ponds. To use these tool sets requires you to have a fundamental knowledge of the civil design process. The Survey Add-in handles the communication with data collectors, the reduction of field data, and drafting line work from the field. To use the tools of Survey you must know something about surveying methods and terms.

This book addresses the use of and provides a basic understanding of the tools found in Land Desktop and its two add-ins. The book, however, is NOT a surveying or engineering textbook nor is it a tips and tricks book. You can peruse the news groups or the Land Desktop Web page for those advanced needs.

This book provides explanations of and exercises that help develop a basic understanding of the surveying and civil design tools found within the routines of the Desktop. Many of the examples are from people who use the software everyday while other examples contain difficulties to demonstrate the capabilities of the software.

There are two types of tools within the desktop, tools for the development of fundamental data and tools for designing. Fundamental data is point data (X,Y and Z), line curves and spirals and Digital Terrain Models (DTMs). These tools are found in the Desktop and the Survey Add-in. it is upon this foundation data that the second tool set, the tools found in Civil Design, develops roadway, pond and hydrological plans and results. These results of the plans can be fundamental information, i.e. point data, lines and curves and surfaces which in turn are used by Land Desktop of Survey to communicate the design to the field.

The tools in the Desktop and its Add-ins have four types of functions creating, evaluating, editing and annotating. Whether working with points, lines or surfaces, there are Land Desktop tools to use on these objects that fall into one of the four task groups. Exercises in this book emphasize the tasks each of the different tool sets provides to the user.

The first six chapters of the book cover the fundamental data groups and the Land Desktop. These chapters cover points, lines and curves, parcels, labeling, surfaces and volumes. Chapters 7-14 focus on the Civil Design Add-in for the Desktop. The tools in these chapters cover hydrology analysis, grading, storm and sanitary piping design and the roadway design process. The roadway design process uses lines and arcs, profiles, cross sections, templates and volume calculations. At each step along the roadway design process are tools that create, evaluate, edit and annotate the elements of the roadway design.

Chapters 15-17 explore the Survey Add-in to Land Desktop. The tools in these chapters download and upload data to data collectors, reduce traverses, create figures and provide tools to analyze field observations.
