From the Preface
The HVAC/R industry has progressively become more technical through the years. With new technology, industries are requiring employee skills to be updated to match the current changes. HVAC/R certification and competency tests are directed toward students and technicians at all skill levels. National Certification Competency Exams are being offered by many organizations, including the Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute (ART), North American Technician Excellence (NATE), the Refrigeration Service Engineer Society (RSES), and the ESCO Institute (HVAC Excellence).
Guide to the NATE/ICE Certification Exams is designed to help students and technicians study for and pass many of the exams that are offered today. The book is divided into three parts. Part I, Study Guide, includes bolded key words to help the reader remember specifics about a certain topic. Part II includes multiple-choice study questions similar to those found on certification exams, and Part III is the answer key to the multiple-choice questions found in Part II. Each part of the book includes sections. These sections are divided into specific topics of study. The reader can easily go to any topic of interest for further study. This book covers study sections that include: Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Systems and Tools, Gas and Oil-Forced Air and Hot Water Heating Systems, Electrical Theory and Application, and Airflow Components and Duct Fabrication.
The student/technician will benefit more by first reading the Study Guide. Then, the reader should turn to Part II and try to answer the related questions. For example, the first statement in the Study Guide reads, “A torx driver has a star- shaped head and is used on torx-type screws.” The reader should then turn to Part II and answer the first question.
In Section 4 of the Part I Study Guide, an EPA Certification topic has been included. This will help the student/technician to pass Types I, II, and III exams and the Universal Certification.
This text includes 2,400 questions that cover many HVAC/R topics. Included are many electrical and mechanical diagrams that will also help the reader to better understand the concepts. We hope that all of the information provided in this book will assist the student/technician in successfully passing certification tests offered by national HVAC/R organizations.
