Organization and Features of the Text
Guide to Using the National Electrical Code, 2nd Edition, Based on the 2008 National Electrical Code, is organized in a way that will allow you to gain the necessary skills for using the National Electrical Code to find specific information about an electrical installation. Five topic areas have been identified that are needed for a good understanding of how to use the National Electrical Code. The five topic areas make up the five chapters of the book and are organized in a way that will present you with a step-by-step approach to learning how to use the National Electrical Code.

Chapter 1: An Introduction to the National Electrical Code covers topics designed to provide you with an understanding of the history of the National Electrical Code and how it is actually developed. An overview of Article 90, the introductory article of the National Electrical Code, is included in Chapter 1.

The different parts that make up the National Electrical Code are covered in Chapter 2: Organization of the National Electrical Code. There are several parts in the National Electrical Code and having a good understanding of each will allow you to become more proficient in using it.

Chapter 3: Using the National Electrical Code presents a tried-and-true procedure for finding information in the National Electrical Code. Material is also presented that covers how to properly "read" the Code.

Chapter 4: Using the National Electrical Code - Examples takes the procedure for finding information in the National Electrical Code that was introduced in Chapter 3 and shows you how to apply it to actual electrical wiring applications. The examples used in this chapter cover the major content areas that make up most electrical licensing exams given across the country. These content areas include Grounding and Bonding; Services; Feeders; Branch Circuits and Overcurrent Protection; Raceways; Conductors; Motors and Controls; Utilization and General Use Equipment; Special Occupancies and Equipment; and Alarm, Communications, and Low Voltage Circuits.

Chapter 5: Using the National Electrical Code - Practice Questions is the last chapter and it provides a chance for you to answer several practice questions from the major content areas presented in Chapter 4. The questions are designed so that you can use the procedure outlined in Chapter 3 to find the required information in the National Electrical Code. Answers to each of the questions are given in Appendix E so you can check your accuracy in finding National Electrical Code information. This chapter is designed to give you the confidence to find various pieces of information in the National Electrical Code.

Review questions are provided at the end of Chapters 1, 2, and 3. They are designed to evaluate your learning level. The review questions consist of a variety of question types that will challenge but not discourage you. There are no review questions at the ends of Chapters 4 and 5 since these chapters consist of National Electrical Code application examples and practice exercises.

Appendices at the back of the textbook include common electrical formulas used with the National Electrical Code, a procedure for finding information in the National Electrical Code, commonly used tables in the National Electrical Code, and an overview of test-taking strategies for electrical licensing exams. Answers to the review questions from Chapters 1, 2, and 3 are also contained in Appendix E, as well as the answers to the practice exercises from Chapter 5. The book ends with a glossary of common electrical terms to be used as a handy reference.
