From the Preface
Fundamentals of HVAC/R provides comprehensive coverage of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVAC/R) topics for students in vocational schools and technical colleges as well as field technicians. Based on input from industry experts and many academics, this comprehensive, user-friendly text offers fundamental concepts, current trends, and practical applications in the field.

The Story behind the Book
Having always supplemented the texts we use with articles, we realized that this "supplementary" information often exceeded the information in the text. Available air conditioning texts seem either to be too technical - aimed at engineers, or too low level - simply glossing over detailed subject matter. And so, this text was born - an accessible book that provides a good depth of subject matter aimed squarely at installing, servicing, and maintaining HVAC/R systems. Unlike other texts that continue to add content edition after edition, this book was crafted from scratch, starting with the table of contents. After extensive reviews, we found out what you, the readers, require. Thus we have produced a superb, heavily illustrated text with logical organization that that flows extremely well and suits today's visual learner.

Organization of the Book
Structured to prepare students to enter the industry, the book is divided into 10 sections with each section covering a general subject area. Each section is composed of units, with each unit targeting a specific topic beginning with the simplest and progressing to the most complex. The final section pulls all the information together to present detailed coverage of installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of all system types. The 86 units are shorter than chapters found in more traditional texts so that instructors can cover an entire unit in a reasonable amount of time.

Prepare for a Career in HVAC/R with Confidence!
Unlike other texts in the marketplace, Fundamentals of HVAC/R offers:
  • Detailed examples and applications of R-410A throughout the text.
  • A unique section on HVAC/R Science (Units 4-8) that clearly explains the application of fundamental scientific concepts essential to understand air conditioning system operation.
  • Superb coverage of the basic refrigeration cycle and refrigeration components (Section 4: Refrigerants and the Refrigeration System, Units 17-27).
  • Extensive coverage of new refrigerants, including R-410A (Unit 23: Refrigerants and their Properties).
  • Detailed explanations for using service valves to access all types of refrigeration systems (Unit 25). This is the only text that offers in-depth coverage on how to use the most common types of refrigeration system access valves in one concise unit.
  • Referenced EPA Certification Outline showing a cross-reference listing of each specific EPA competency document (Unit 26: Refrigerant Management and the EPA).
  • Construction section (Unit 54: Basic Building Construction).
  • Blueprint reading (Unit 55: Drawing and Blueprint Reading).
  • Consolidation of all types of systems covering installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting in one place, and offering a logical culmination in Section 10: Units 84-86 (Unit 84: Installation Techniques, Unit 85: Planned Maintenance, and Unit 86: Troubleshooting).
Easy to navigate, the text is broken down into bite-sized subsections as reflected in the Contents to help optimize your learning.

Features of the Text:
  • Learning Objectives. Each unit begins with clearly stated objectives that enable you to focus on what you should achieve by the end of the unit.
  • Unit Introduction. These introductions are organized topically and progress from basic fundamentals to practical application with each topic supporting the next topic.
  • Unit Summary. These summaries pull together the main points of the unit and help reinforce learning.
  • Service Tickets. Appearing at the end of most units, this feature provides examples of the types of problems service technicians encounter and how the information in the unit helps solve them.
  • Review Questions. Each unit has a set of review questions to help the reader assess his or her understanding of the material The questions range from simple identification to more complex questions that require application and analysis of the material in the unit.
  • Safety Tips. Safety tips highlight safety issues relevant to the immediate material.
  • Service Tips. Service Tips are practical applications of the information in the unit that help technicians perform their jobs more efficiently.
  • Caution. Caution boxes contain information the student should know to properly operate and protect equipment.
  • Tech Tips. Tech Tips provide extra detail and information for students who want to go beyond the minimum daily requirement of knowledge.
  • English- and Spanish-Language Glossaries. The glossaries help students with both English and Spanish language skills understand the terms used in the HVAC/R field.
