  • Includes new sections on sewage treatment, streets and roads, and rope tying and splicing
  • Expanded sections on field inspection, electricity, HVAC, surveying, drainage, sewage collection, water supply, water storage, fire protection, and safety and first aid
From the Preface
Two decades have elapsed since the Field Engineer's Manual was first published and almost seven years since the second edition was issued.

Several sections have been expanded, updated and revised. Many totally rewritten and three new sections added to expand coverage. In keeping with the established format, this material is presented and organized to provide the user with reliable technical data, over a wide range of engineering topics, readily available for "field" usage. This "hard copy" manual is not intended to compete with laptop computers or electronic surveying instruments. Rather it is a support to all personnel and equipment that is always ready to serve; regardless of time, location or equipment failure.

This manual has been, is and will continue to be indebted to the multitude of sources for the information contained herewith. Again, we must express our thanks to these organizations, societies, companies, publishers, institutions and individuals who so generously participated in this work. Their encouragement and support for the project was expressed throughout the manuscript preparation. The source of all material has been faithfully noted at each respective location. Any oversight is certainly unintentional.

A special note must be recorded to acknowledge Wayne's significant contribution to this third edition. His graphic skills have not only greatly enhanced the overall appearance of the manual but many illustrations reflect his artistic input. As always, it was a pleasure to work with my son on a major project.

As with the two previous editions, we have faithfully attempted to remain true to the original mission as stated in the first preface. Hopefully, we have succeeded. We now respectfully submit this third edition for release. Carry it with you as a reliable reference source and use the "note" pages, located at the end of the manual, to tailor the material for your specific technical pursuits.
