Description
Ideal for students and beginning technicians, Electricity for Refrigeration, Heating and Air Conditioning, 7th Edition, zeroes in on the basic electrical principles necessary to understand today's modern control systems. This extraordinarily practical approach allows readers to focus exclusively on the electronics information they will use in the field, without bogging them down in unnecessary theory. Chapter 9 includes new information on motor frames and electronically commutated motors, ECM. Such as the circuits being discussed in schematic diagrams, as well as the direction of the current flow within circuits. As in past editions, emphasis is on developing systematic diagnosis and troubleshooting methods and procedures in order to enable readers to become highly-skilled, professional HVAC-R service technicians. A comprehensive glossary is also included to assist those who are new to the field in understanding and using industry terms.
Features:
Learning objectives, definitions of key terms, summaries, plus plenty of review questions are included in every chapter to increase comprehension and improve retention.
New photos and illustrations encourage readers to apply information presented in the book directly to modern equipment, components, and control systems.
Symbols are introduced and used consistently, and schematic diagrams of 12 specific applications used in industry are explored, enabling readers to become expert troubleshooters.
In-depth discussion of the types, designs, starting components, and diagnosis and troubleshooting procedures for single-phase motors mirrors their importance in the industry>
Coverage of contactors, relays, thermostats, pressure and manual switches, overload, and other state-of-the-art electrical components prepares readers for work in the field today.
From the Preface
Electricity for Refrigeration, Heating, and Air Conditioning was initially written because there was no text that adequately covered the electrical principles and practices required of an installation or service technician in the refrigeration, heating and air-conditioning industry. This text is written with a blend of theory and practice suitable for the vocational/technical student or the industry practitioner who wishes to upgrade his or her knowledge and skills. The purpose of this text is to assemble concepts and procedures that will enable the reader to work successfully in the industry.
Organization
It is difficult to organize an electrical text to be used in refrigeration, heating, and air-conditioning programs in educational institutions because of the many different types of programs and the variety of the delivery of the information. The information covered in this text is organized from the very basics to the circuitry and troubleshooting of control systems in the industry. The organization is industry driven because of the correlation of industry standards and the many new developments that continue to be made. Electrical devices are covered in detail in a systematic order with the troubleshooting of the components following an explanation of how they work. Troubleshooting control systems should be the objective of most students and industry personnel using this text and is covered in detail.
Features of this Edition
There are new features as well as existing features of this text that are advantageous to students and instructors alike. Each chapter begins with
objectives
that should be mastered as the student progresses through each chapter.
Key terms
are emphasized at the beginning of each chapter in order for the student to know what information is ahead, and the key terms are highlighted in color in the body of the text. Each chapter is concluded with a
summary
that allows the student to review information that has been covered in the chapter. Many chapters use
service calls
to reinforce service procedures that are commonly used in the industry along with some procedures that the student has the opportunity to solve. Important elements of the text are highlighted in color in this edition, including circuits that are being discussed and important concepts and safety cautions. In the back of the text there is a reference chart of electrical symbols including switches, thermostats, contactors, and relays.
New in this Edition
One new section has been added to the text. Chapter 9 covers electric motors that are used in the heating, air-conditioning, and refrigeration industry. With the industry moving to variable-speed drives for air movement, the electronically commutated motor (ECM) has become a major factor in the industry. A section has been added to Chapter 9 covering the construction, operation, and troubleshooting of the ECM. With many furnaces using electronic control boards that control almost every aspect of the operation of a gas furnace, a sequence of operations has been added in Chapter 13. Art has been added or improved in many chapters. And finally, Appendix A, Motor Review Table, is provided as a handy reference to the types and characteristics of electric motors. The focus of this text remains its practical application of theory.
