New from the National Electrical Code and NFPA 99 source: Your complete guide to electrical systems in health care facilities!
Electrical systems and equipment are so critical to patient care and life safety in health care facilities, they're governed by an array of codes, standards, and guidelines. For reliable information that addresses all aspects of electrical systems in these specialized environments, turn to the comprehensive NFPA Guide to Electrical Systems in Health Care Facilities.
Get support for everything from design to compliance to maintenance.
Hospital engineers, staff electricians, electrical contractors, and inspectors will find:
- Practical advice about complying with relevant NFPA, JCAHO, AIA, IEEE, and other requirements.
- The Guide references the 2005 editions of the NEC and NFPA 99.
- Detailed information required for passing inspections, including audits and surveys by JCAHO, OSHA, local building officials, fire marshals, and other AHJs.
- Photos, graphics, tables, and other clarifying illustrations.
Zero in on the targeted facts you need to protect patients and staff, guard against unplanned power interruptions or shutdowns, and stay in compliance. NFPA's first-time guide covers it all.
Excerpts from the Preface
NFPA Guide to Electrical Systems in Health Care Facilities was developed to provide some of the information and suggestions necessary to achieve a safe and reliable electrical system in a health care facility. The book contains material that will be useful to design professionals (both architects and engineers), the facility's engineering and maintenance department, its biomedical engineering department, appropriate clinical and administrative staffs of the facility, contractors, manufacturers of medical electrical equipment, teachers, and inspectors and surveyors. The information will help the user in the design, renovation, and operation of the facility, and in preparing for and passing the many surveys and inspections conducted by JCAHO, OSHA, local building officials and fire marshals, and other authorities that the facility will have to undergo.
Chapter 1, "Introduction," defines the term health care facilities and provides general information about the applicable codes. Chapter 2, "Electrical Supply," discusses utility service arrangements and reliability, the electric service layout and equipment, and other electric service considerations. Chapter 3, "Distribution System," covers in detail the items that make up the distribution system.
Chapter 4, "Essential Electrical Systems," discusses the components and requirements of essential electrical systems, which are alternate power systems designed to ensure continuity of electrical service when normal sources of power are disrupted. Chapter 5, "Grounding, Isolated Power Supplies and Electrical System Devices," describes the concept and requirements of grounding; the requirements, operation, and equipment of isolated power supplies; and various system devices, such as receptacles, switches, and ground-fault circuit interrupters. Chapter 6, "Lighting, Alarms, and Communications," covers the most important aspects of lighting, signal systems, and communication systems in health care facilities.
Chapter 7, "Requirements for Specific Areas and Facilities," discusses the specific electrical system needs of special health care areas and facilities such as, for example, wet locations, radiology suites, and operating rooms. Chapter 8, "Medical Equipment," examines the issues surrounding the hazards associated with the use of medical equipment for patient diagnosis and treatment. Chapter 9, "Testing, Maintenance, and Record Keeping," provides information on how to test and maintain electrical distribution systems and equipment in health care facilities.
Case studies and illustrations appearing throughout the text help to clarify concepts. Additional material in the form of selected NFPA definitions of key terms, a list of frequently asked questions on electrical systems and equipment, an electrical systems and equipment checklist, a guide to the safe use of high-frequency electricity in health care facilities, and a list of references are provided at the back of the book for easy reference.
