Excerpt from the Introduction The refrigeration industry (man made ice) is just now in its second century. The need for man made ice was initially developed for the preservation of food. The perceived need of air conditioning for human comfort began to develop in the 1920s and 1930s primarily in public buildings. As the technology developed in compressors and refrigerant gases, the need for air conditioning in homes became possible. One of the first housing developments in the U.S. to have central cooling built-in was in St. Louis, Missouri, in the early 1950s. Since the 1970s almost all homes and automobiles built in the U.S. have had air conditioning installed by the builder or manufacturer. As we approach the 21st century there are few people in the U.S. whose lives are not directly affected by air conditioning and refrigeration on a daily basis. From food preservation and the food service industry, to commercial and residential cooling, the hospital and medical industry to space flight, we live with it daily. Today, in third world countries, refrigeration for food preservation purposes has penetrated much further than air conditioning for human comfort. The technology is available; however many third world countries cannot afford it. People who study U.S. population movements are well aware that were it not for air conditioning today, many areas of the South and Southwest such as Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, Phoenix, Los Angeles, Miami and Atlanta would never have developed as dramatically as they did. Without residential cooling, these large cities would instead be large towns with populations of about 25% of present day populations. At the present time there are approximately 1,200 community colleges and trade schools offering courses in air conditioning and refrigeration. It is estimated that probably 50,000 men get into the trade each year by this method of training. From the Foreword The first and second editions of Doolin's Trouble Shooters Bible, first published in 1963 have now sold nearly 200,000 copies. Though J. H. Doolin is deceased now, his training philosphy continues through the Trouble Shooters Bible. As current President of Doolco, Inc., I was involved with the founding of the company in 1963. The task of revising the Doolin's Trouble Shooters Bible is now done by a long time associate of Mr. Doolin's by the name of Bob Dixon. Bob Dixon has worked as a serviceman in the ACR trade since the mid 1950s. When Mr. Doolin operated a trade school in Dallas, Bob Dixon was his chief instructor. Bob's vast knowledge of the service business and a rare ability to teach the skills necessary to become a good serviceman are now carried over to the Trouble Shooters Bible.
