From the Foreword
The book you are holding should be required reading for all builders and remodelers. In Defensive Estimating: Protecting Your Profits, Bill Asdal has done a masterful job of identifying the barriers to profit and answering the question, "How much should I charge?"
I would like to have a nickel for every time I've heard a builder tell the story of how he went to closing and the real estate agent walked out with a bigger check than he did. The lessons learned at the construction school of hard knocks are not quickly forgotten. Most builders and remodelers would prefer to learn from other people's mistakes, rather than experiencing them on their own.
Bill Asdal provides over 30 years of building experience in 12 easy-to-understand chapters. Defensive Estimating helps you figure out why you are in business and what you should be getting out of your business. He gives you systems to improve the process and ways to prevent you from chasing your tail trying to make ends meet. Within the pages of Defensive Estimating you will find hundreds of ideas and simple suggestions that you will want to refer to time after time. Asdal takes the magic and science of estimating and turns it into an art. He gives you honest answers to tough questions. If you are serious in your commitment to improve your business and your profit, read this book!
