From the Preface
Deck Construction Based on the 2009 International Residential Code is designed to put provisions of the 2009 International Residential Code in the hands of the deck industry in a customized format that includes explanations and illustrations related specifically to deck construction. This book provides the 2009 International Residential Code sections relevant to deck design and installation, making reference to the International Residential Code sections and use of the International Residential Code sections much easier and more recognizable to the deck industry. Deck contractors, installers, designers, homebuilders, inspectors, plan reviewers and manufacturers will all find this book helpful in completing their work in accordance with the International Residential Code provisions, and in enhancing their comprehension of how the International Residential Code applies to deck design and construction.
This book is not written in the format of a "how-to" book and does not intend to teach novice deck builders about the fundamentals of deck construction. Rather, individuals who have a basic understanding of deck construction can now take their skills to the next level, with a deck-specific comprehension of the leading residential code adopted in the United States. Unlike other deck books on the market, either with design ideas or how-to advice, the information contained in this book is organized in a manner that allows the reader to see and compare the author's explanations and the International Residential Code text simultaneously, thus increasing the credibility of the information herein. This book can be used for training and simply read cover to cover, or also can function as a jobsite reference of the 2009 International Residential Code during plan approval, construction and inspections.
Nine chapters in this book take the reader through an understanding of how the codes work, how a deck affects the structure it is built against and the building blocks of a deck, including foundations, framing, decking, stairs and guards. It concludes with a discussion of popular amenities often included in deck construction and a brief overview of the differing regulations of commercial decks in public locations. Relevant International Residential Code code sections and International Residential Code defined terms are provided for each topic, followed by a discussion of how the section applies specifically to deck design and construction. In some of the International Residential Code sections provided, the information specific to the following discussion has been emphasized with an underline. Full-color photos and figures illustrate both correct and incorrect installations and intend to give the reader a clear understanding of installation practices to employ and avoid. Building, plumbing, mechanical and electrical provisions that may relate to a new deck installation are included.
The commentary and opinions set forth in this text are those of the author and do not necessarily represent the official position of the ICC. In addition, they may not represent the views of any enforcing agency, as such agencies have the sole authority to render interpretations of the International Residential Code.
