From the Preface
It would be ideal for anyone concerned with communicating in both Spanish and English to take the appropriate language courses. In real life, however, that is a very hard thing to do. Most construction professionals have barely enough time to deal with their existing schedules, much less add a course several nights per week. So, while I do recommend that you take the language courses, this book was put together assuming that you have not done so. And I should add that most language courses do not cover construction terms. I strongly recommend that you try to communicate in your opposite language as much as possible. That will make you much better at putting words into sentences, and at getting ideas from your mind into your coworker's mind. Talk to the guy who speaks the other language about lunch, about sports, and so on. (You might even make a friend.)
In addition to its coverage of construction, this book also covers other necessary subjects, such as employment. This is one of the key areas where Spanish- and English-speakers first interact, and it is very important to the people actually working (or hoping to work) in the construction business. You will also find material on the construction business, housekeeping, materials, equipment, conversion factors, and measurement. I also added a section on demolition work, which is often the first construction employment for native Spanish speakers.
I suspect that there are important terms that I have inadvertently left out of this book. After all, construction terminology in either language could easily fill up several books. I generally defaulted to Mexican terms when there was a difference, although I tried to list alternatives. So, I was forced to make a lot of choices, and I remain quite open to suggestions from readers regarding alternate choices, spellings, and so on. I will update this book on a continual basis and will attempt to include material suggested by readers, and to keep pace with developments in the construction business.
