From the Preface
by Paul Rosenberg
Plumbing is one of the largest and certainly one of the most essential of the construction trades. Yet it gets much less coverage than most of the others. So, putting together this book was a pleasure for me. It was also gratifying to see that the book developed as we had hoped - a small book with almost everything a plumber really needs to know for his or her daily work.
Obviously, any attempt to cover the entire plumbing and piping industry in a single book requires that certain material is excluded. In this book I chose to cover the material that is used most by people who install and maintain plumbing systems. Bear in mind that unlike many other construction specialties, there are a number of plumbing codes, and their acceptance varies from place to place. In the design data, we used the most stringent of the requirements where we found differences. Generally, the various codes run parallel to one another, but we defaulted to the most demanding one in any particular case. You may wish to verify your local codes especially in cases where you are installing a large number of items. The cost difference between a single 2-inch or 2 1/2-inch fitting may be negligible, but the difference between a thousand 2-inch or 2 1/2-inch fittings is significant.
Naturally, there may be some aspects of plumbing work that I have overlooked, or that are not covered in sufficient depth for some readers. I monitor the industry and will update this book on a regular basis. I will also attempt to include additional material suggested by readers and to keep pace with developments in the trade.
