From the Preface
What is the purpose of this book?
This book has two purposes - to serve as a valuable research and reference source for technicians in the HVACR industry, and to offer solid, in-depth assistance for those technicians preparing to take the NATE Certification Exam. This publication directly reflects the continuing efforts of major industry organizations (including ACCA, NATE, PHCC, and RSES) to promote and encourage a single certification program for technicians in the industry. As such, it assumes a basic working knowledge of HVACR systems on the part of the reader. It is not intended to be exhaustive, but individuals who want to take a specific NATE Exam can focus their study on the subject matter contained in this book (or in other books in this series) to help them prepare for the test. For more comprehensive information, please visit www.rses.org, where you will find many other resources, including RSES training courses that expand greatly on the material included here.
What is NATE?
As an independent, third-party, nonprofit certification body supported by a broad-based coalition of industry leaders, North American Technician Excellence, Inc. (NATE) represents a shared commitment to improving the HVACR industry through voluntary testing and certification. NATE supporters include contractors, distributors, education and training providers, manufacturers, technicians, utilities, and their respective trade associations. There are 21 NATE installation, service, and senior tests. Specialties include Air Conditioning, Air Distribution, Heat Pumps, Gas Furnaces, Oil Furnaces, Hydronic Gas, Hydronic Oil, Light Commercial Refrigeration, Commercial Refrigeration, and Senior HVAC Efficiency Analyst.
Why is it so important to be NATE-certified?
Your NATE certification tells the world that you have the know-how and ability to do the job right. It marks your status as a professional whose high work standard is officially recognized and documented. Because it signifies that you are highly competent and knowledgeable in your field, your employer and customers will quite likely consider your certified status as being an indication that your services are more valuable. They know that your ability to perform high quality service will benefit them, and they'll be willing to compensate you accordingly. Your standing as a certified technician also lends added prestige to the entire industry - and that comes back as a benefit for you, through increased recognition and respect.
