Description

Be confident you're doing the job right with the expert advice in JLC's Construction Tips and Techniques.

When it comes to residential construction, it's certainly true that "the devil is in the details." For every simple rule of thumb or standard procedure, there can easily be dozens of exceptions, leaving even the most experienced contractor to ask "OK, but what about...?"

That's why there's JLC's Construction Tips and Techniques. Drawn from more than 20 years of The Journal of Light Construction, it gives contractors accurate and reliable solutions to those tough jobsite challenges that can slow down a project and needlessly drive up costs.
  • Includes more than 300 advanced contractor questions, with straightforward answers and effective solutions from the industry's leading construction experts.
  • Covers all aspects of residential building and remodeling.
  • Organized in order of construction, from foundation to finish.
  • Thoroughly documented and illustrated.
  • Saves valuable time and improves job quality.
JLC's Construction Tips and Techniques faces the tough problems that are always coming up on the job site, and tells you how to solve them. Packed with step-by-step instructions and large, clear illustrations, this is a book you can refer to for a straight answer to just about any on-the-job problem you come up against.

You'll find questions and answers on all aspects of residential building and remodeling problems: foundations and site work, framing, roofing, exteriors, plumbing and electrical, thermal and moisture control, HVAC and interiors.

From the Introduction
On the typical residential job site, hardly a day goes by without some question being raised. How could we do that faster? Is there a better way? What's the strongest - or most durable - method? How do I install this product?

Even after a project is built, the questions continue. Why is there condensation in the attic? What's causing those black spots? Why is the exterior finish flaking?

This book gathers together questions that builders have sent JLC over the past decade, and provides answers written by the most capable experts we could find. We weren't able to include all the questions we've received, so we chose ones that seemed most representative of the common experience of builders everywhere.

Many of the questions have simple, straightforward answers. But some of the answers are less clear-cut - attempts to troubleshoot perplexing situations, to arrive at a plausible explanation for a baffling set of conditions. For me, these are among the most interesting: they don't so much tell you what to think as how to think about unexpected results on the job.

We hope you enjoy the book and find it useful. And as new questions arise, we hope you'll ask us. We welcome every opportunity to do what we do best: provide sound, practical information you can build by.
