Description
Table of Contents
With a fresh approach that addresses the unique features of construction management for the 21st century, Construction Management: Emerging Trends and Technologies provides an overview of the construction industry and the management of construction projects.
It offers solid, foundational concepts in "traditional" areas, including construction contracts, cash flow, estimating and scheduling. Setting it apart from traditional books on the subject, it breaks away from these traditional areas to explore emerging areas of interest, such as "mega-projects," design-build construction, public private partnerships, the application of information technology to construction, configuration management, and sustainable construction.
From the Preface
This text is written for students of construction management, construction technology, and civil engineering who are taking their first course in construction management. The goal of the book is to provide a foundation in the important aspects of construction management and suggest new and emerging areas that will concern the construction manager in the future.
This book addresses the unique features of construction management for the 21st century as it provides an overview of the construction industry and the management of construction projects. Construction Management: Emerging Trends and Technologies offers solid, foundational concepts in traditional areas, including construction contracts, cash flow, estimating, and scheduling. To set this text apart from traditional books on the subject, however, the content moves beyond traditional areas to explore emerging areas of interest, such as megaprojects, design-build construction, public— private partnerships, the application of information technology to construction, configuration management, and sustainable construction. This book can be used as a resource for anyone seeking a better understanding of the up-and-coming state of the construction management industry.
The material in the text and its structure is to a large extent influenced by my experience in construction projects and teaching at Rutgers University for 21 years. My experience in the industry has led me to believe that the fundamental place to begin a study of construction is to understand how contracts affect all aspects of a construction project. Therefore, the book opens with extensive coverage of construction contractual relationships. I have attempted to explain contracts with clarity for those new to construction. In addition, my research has led me to believe that an introduction to the possibilities of applying computers and information technology to construction issues is essential for students entering the workforce in the 21st century. Therefore, I have attempted to infuse the text with applications of information technology. I have tried to explain all topics in clear language to help students who are new to construction management understand topics like scheduling and cash flow.
Case studies of various projects are included in the text. They are included to amplify the material in the book, and to provide a "real world" link to the topics discussed. Shorter field notes are also contained in the text. Their purpose is to provide additional information or background about a topic in the text.
With thorough, up-to-date information and detailed explanations, this is an indispensable resource for anyone seeking a better understanding of the up-and-coming state of the construction management industry.
Features:
