Carpentry 5th Edition follows the logical path of a residential project, using reader-friendly presentations and easy-to-follow diagrams to explore building plans, sitework and layout, footings and foundations, framing, interior and exterior surfaces, cabinetry and flooring, and more. This text provides a unique blend of all the need-to-know information for both traditional and up-to-date construction practices. Beginning with the layout of the building and finishing with trim carpentry, each section features step-by-step procedures for key carpentry jobs, critical safety information, tips of the trade, and insight into the construction. Stunning, photo-realistic drawings convey many concepts and procedures with detailed, easy-to-understand information.

Features:
  • WHAT'S WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE? At the end of each unit, these new features pose questions about a photograph which shows a situation in which one or more things are wrong. The companion photo shows the situation corrected with a textual description of the problem and how it was corrected. These features provide opportunities for students to apply what they have learned in the chapter by critiquing these situations.
  • ESTIMATING FORMULAS At the end of some chapters, a description of an estimating process is followed by an "Estimating Formula" - a figure that summarizes in a table the shorthand estimating formulas and includes an example. The summarizing graphic makes the estimating content more user-friendly and provides an application opportunity.
  • GOING GREEN TIPS These features scattered across each unit highlight environmental resources and green building techniques, focusing on sustainability and eco-friendly architecture.
  • CONTENT CHANGES TO REFLECT CHANGES IN THE INDUSTRY Throughout text, the author has streamlined content and cut material based on the latest innovations in residential construction. Examples include new material on cutting ceiling molding on the flat with a compound miter cut; and improved demonstration a coped joint for ceiling molding (Unit 27).
  • REFINED ILLUSTRATION AND PHOTO PROGRAM: The full-color design showcases photo-realistic line art and dozens of new photos offering a realistic representation of residential construction from which learners can make practical connections between descriptions and application of concepts.
  • LATEST SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS: Prominently features the latest safety considerations so readers can avoid the dangers of certain procedures, tools, and equipment in order to stay safe on the job.
  • VISUALS OF LIVE CONSTRUCTION: Visuals of live construction sites assist hands-on learners in making an easy transition from the classroom to the jobsite.
  • HELPFUL TRICKS OF THE TRADE: Provides helpful tricks of the trade to allow for easier and more efficient completion of tasks.
  • SUCCESS STORIES: A "success story" - a fresh collection for the 5th Edition - opens each of the sections in the book, providing a look at the day-to-day job of a carpenter and the successes accomplished through dedication and education.
From the Preface
Welcome to Carpentry, 5th Edition, a modern approach to residential construction, Designed for students enrolled in carpentry courses at secondary and two-year, four-year postsecondary schools, Carpentry, 5th Edition, walks the student step-by-step through the various principles and practices associated with constructing a residential building.

APPROACH
A unique blend of traditional and up-to-date construction practices, the author focuses topics on need-to-know information in four comprehensive sections: Section 1 - Tools and Materials, Section 2 - Rough Carpentry, Section 3 - Exterior Finish, Section 4 - Interior Finish. Beginning with the layout of the building and finishing with trim carpentry, each section features step-by-step procedures of key carpentry jobs, critical safety information, tips of the trade, and insight into the construction industry.

Section 1
This section describes wood as a building material in its many forms - from boards to engineered sheets and beams. Fasteners and tools critical to securing and shaping building products are also covered, while a unit on prints and codes helps students to understand the written language of construction.

Section 2
Beginning with the basics, this section explains how to locate a building on a site using surveying equipment; explores concrete applications for foundations, slabs, and stairs; and steps the students through the framing of floors, walls, roofs, and stairs. In addition, a section on energy conservation considerations for insulation and ventilation helps students keep pace with industry standards.

Section 3
Exterior carpentry jobs, including applying various roof and siding finishes, installing windows and doors, and constructing decks with rails and fences, are covered in this section.

Section 4
The final trim carpentry jobs involved in finishing a residential building are described in this section. The section begins with the application of drywall and various finishes on floors, walls, and ceilings. Next, fitting trim to windows, doors, and walls is explained. Also, constructing and finishing a stair case with balustrade is covered. Lastly, to finish the job, the text explains how to install manufactured cabinets and construct countertops, drawers, and doors.

New to this Edition
The full-color design brings the job site to life - integrating photo-realistic drawings, drawn to scale, and on-the-job photos drawn from construction projects across the nation. Through a refined illustration and photo program, the fifth edition offers a realistic representation of residential construction from which learners can make practical connections between descriptions and application of concepts. Many photographs replace figures, resulting in a greater sense of realism and greater accessibility. (For example, a new photo of concrete aggregate explicitly shows the variations (Unit 10); and photos of craftspeople installing various insulation have been added (Unit 17). Other significant improvements include a wood micrograph (Unit 1), new photos of shingles labeled by the author (Unit 18), two photographs of self-tapping screws (Unit 4), new photos of plain sawn wood (Unit 1), resized photos of plans so that they can be scaled for dimensions (Unit 8), and a new graphical representation of level and plumb (Unit 9).
  • At the end of each unit, a new "What's Wrong with This Picture?" feature poses questions about a photograph that shows a situation in which one or more things are wrong. The companion photo shows the situation corrected with a textual description of the problem and how it was corrected. This feature provides opportunities for students to apply what they have learned in the chapter by critiquing these situations.
  • At the end of some chapters, a description of an estimating process is followed by an Estimating Formula - a figure that summarizes in a table the shorthand estimating formulas and includes an example. The summarizing graphic makes the estimating content more user-friendly and provides an application opportunity.
  • Going Green tips, scattered across each unit, highlight environmental resources and green building techniques, focusing on sustainability and eco-friendly architecture.
  • Throughout the text, the author has streamlined content and cut material based on the latest innovations in residential construction. Organizational changes include moving up coverage of floor finish to Unit 25 (formerly Unit 29); moving ceiling finish content into a reworked Unit 24, "Wall and Ceiling Finish," so that coverage of ceramic tile (Chapter 72) is now followed by suspended ceilings (Chapter 73); and relocating content on tile roofing (formerly in Chapter 52 with roll roofing, now deleted) to appear with that of asphalt shingles in Unit 18, Chapter 51.
