From the Introduction
This Workbook to the Building Department Administration (BDA), 3rd Edition, is intended to provide practical learning assignments for independent study of the BDA. The independent study format provides a method for the learner to complete the study program in an unregulated time period. Proceeding through the workbook, the student can measure his or her level of knowledge by using the quizzes in each study session.

All study sessions contain specific learning objectives, a lesson note that gives the total perspective of the study session and a list of statements and questions summarizing the key points for study. The quizzes are designed to assess the student's retention of technical knowledge; there fore, before beginning the quizzes, it would be of great benefit if students thoroughly review the corresponding chapter of the BDA and the lesson note and key points of this workbook.

The quizzes are designed to encourage the student to develop the habit of carefully reading the text for a clear understanding of the subject material. The questions are not intended to be tricky or misleading. The following three formats are used to vary the method of evaluation:

1. Multiple Choice: Each statement is followed by a unique group of possible responses from which to choose.

2. True/False: Each statement is either true or false.

3. Completion: Each statement must be correctly completed by inserting the proper word or text from the BDA.

The workbook is structured so that every question is followed by the opportunity to record the learner's response and the corresponding text reference. The correct responses are provided at the back of the workbook in the answer key so that the student can assess his or her knowledge immediately.

It should be noted that the information in this workbook is based on the parent document the Building Department Administration (BDA), 3rd Edition, first printing. This is important because some issues in the industry might have evolved, and the current practices might not be exactly the same as reflected in the parent document. As an example, in 2009 the International Code Council (ICC) revised its code development process, which is different than the process described in the BDA because the BDA was printed in June of 2007.
