Blueprint Reading for Electricians, 2nd Edition, has been expanded to more fully explore a number of concepts through more robust chapters on drawing and sketching, projections and perspectives, scaling and dimensions, architectural considerations, and symbology. In addition, Blueprint Reading for Electricians, 2nd Edition, is chock full of new chapters, including framing and structures, elevations, schedules, and more. A new chapter on print-related math provides numerous opportunities to practice math applications, including conversion between feet and inches, working with improper fractions and mixed numbers, area and volume calculations, and more. Although these concepts were touched upon in the previous edition, this revised text more thoroughly delves into existing concepts and offers brand new information to further support the electrical technologist.
This book is divided into 18 chapters and has four basic groups of information. Chapters 1 through 6 cover basic drawing and sketching techniques, as well as how to recognize, create, and use the common views and projections used in construction drawings. Related math is then covered. It is important to be able to perform basic math functions to be able to transfer information from construction drawings to the job site. This section also introduces commonly used framing and construction types. Finally, this section provides an overview of construction drawings and how they relate to one another.
Chapters 7 through 10 cover the recognition and application of symbology in electrical, mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic, and specialized symbology. Symbology is the interpretation of symbols, which are graphic representations of actual devices used by drafters on prints. The electrician must be able to read and understand all of the other craft prints and symbols so that he or she can decide where runs must be placed. HVAC and piping runs are more difficult to move than electrical and conduit runs. Therefore, the electrician runs often must work around the other crafts. The symbology used in the chapters is from the current American National Standards Institute and other standard symbols. The book notes that new symbols are being developed every day and that drawing legends should list these new symbols.
The third group of information details each of the types of construction drawings. Special attention is given to the electrical aspect of each drawing. The drawings covered include site plans, floor plans, elevations, details, and sections. This section also covers schedules and specifications.
Finally, Chapters 16 through 18 are the culmination of the print-reading text and activities. They cover residential, commercial, and industrial prints and specifications. The residential prints are supplied on CD and require no specifications other than window and door schedules on the prints and the National Electrical Code combined with local construction codes. Partial commercial and industrial specifications are supplied in the text book. Exercises are supplied that use the specifications with the commercial and industrial prints. Along with the book specifications is a partial set of prints on CD for the commercial and industrial chapters. These prints may be viewed or printed full size for completion of the chapter review questions and other exercises. It is suggested that the instructor and class work together to develop more practice exercises with the supplied prints and specifications.

Welcome to the second edition of Blueprint Reading for Electricians, which has been redesigned and updated to provide knowledge of the fundamentals to electrical technologists in apprenticeship programs, vocational-technical schools and colleges, and community colleges. The text emphasizes a solid foundation of classroom theory supported by on-the-job hands-on practice. Every project, every piece of knowledge, and every new task will be based on the experience and information acquired as each technician progresses through his or her career. This book, along with the others in this series, contains a significant portion of the material that will form the basis for success in an electrical career.
This text was developed by blending up-to-date practice with long-lived theories in an effort to help technicians learn how to better perform on the job. It is written at a level that invites further discussion beyond its pages while clearly and succinctly answering the questions of how and why. Improvements to this edition were made possible by the continued commitment by the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) in partnership with Delmar Cengage Learning to deliver the very finest in training materials for the electrical profession.
About the Author
Rob Zachariason
is an instructor at Minnesota State Community and Technical College and an instructor for the Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee. He is currently the chair of the construction trades division at Minnesota State Community and Technical College. Courses Rob has taught include Blueprint Reading, Residential Wiring, Electrical Materials, National Electrical Code, Motors and Generators, Conduit Bending, Electrical Services, First-year NJATC Curriculum, Second-year NJATC Curriculum, and Fifth-year NJATC Curriculum. Rob is a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, the International Association of Electrical Inspectors, and the National Education Association. He carries a Master Electricians license in North Dakota and Minnesota. Rob graduated from Northwest Technical College with a Diploma in Construction Electricity. He then went on to complete the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee's Inside Wireman Program. Rob worked as an electrician for 10 years before becoming a full-time instructor. His time in the field was spent with Gary Fritz Electric and Robert Gibb and Sons. While with Gary Fritz Electric he ran a service truck and worked residential, commercial, and small industrial jobs. While with Robert Gibb and Sons, he spent his time doing electrical control work a running a service truck.
