From the Preface
The construction industry has been competing with high technology-related industries for decades in the race to attract individuals to enter a trade. The prominence of being a craftsperson has seemed to diminish over time and, as a result, more young individuals now seek careers away from the construction industry.
The increased number of students entering college has offered avenues for creating a financially rewarding career without performing manual labor in the construction industry. Many schools and colleges focus their financial resources toward technology and not on trade education in an effort to remain in pace with the demands of particular career fields.
Technology brought progress to the construction industry and opened the doors for many individuals to enjoy a career in construction without ever using a tool. Computer-aided drafting has revolutionized the design aspect of construction projects but cannot replace the manual drafting skills required to communicate effectively on a job site. As with any technological advancement, educational voids are created. One educational area that has been neglected is the intense teaching of important manual drafting skills.
An installer on a job site does not have computer technology available nor is it feasible to communicate with computerized illustrations for information required immediately. Visit any job site and you will see an individual using a pad of paper or even cardboard on which to write material lists or draw sketches. Manual drafting is a form of communication that has immediate results and clarifies the scope of work described during a conversation.
Both an individual and an educational program can benefit from incorporating extensive blueprint reading and drafting in their curriculum or training. Waiting to learn these important skills on the job site is no longer an option in the fast-paced construction environment. Plumbing and mechanical contractors focus on methods for increasing productivity by providing adequate information to an installer, and this book focuses on required knowledge and proven techniques.
Extensive comparisons between plan, side, and isometric views included in this book emphasize the true value of blueprint reading and drafting. Basic abbreviations, symbols, architectural-design intent, construction documents, and various drafting techniques in this comprehensive book are training tools for any company, organization, or school that is involved in installing, servicing, or teaching the plumbing trade.
Why this Book Was Created
This unique, in-depth book was created to enhance the communication process between a designer and an installer. Designing or installing a plumbing system requires code knowledge and sizing criteria, which are included in this book.
This book is designed to flow from blueprint reading basics to complex isometric illustrations. Creating a shop drawing is an important method in increasing productivity and minimizing costly installation errors. Blending many crucial aspects relating to project documents and material organizational skills is one of the informative and educational features of this book. The lessons relate directly to important information required to be professional and productive on the job site. Understanding the complexity of properly creating and reading a shop drawing or blueprint is emphasized.
Features of the Second Edition
This revision has been expanded to describe how the plumbing trade can overlap with other building trades:
Structural Steel:
Plumbers must review structural steel drawings and details on certain building designs to route piping in ceilings and to locate columns and beams. Information on how to interpret structural steel and concrete footing blueprints/details adds a new dimension to this edition.
Civil:
While most plumbers are not responsible for installing water and sewer services outside a building, a plumber must coordinate the entry and termination points and elevations with a utility contractor. Size of piping, depth and location of buried piping are examples of how a plumber must use a civil drawing.
In addition, this edition has been thoroughly reviewed and revised to improve the quality and accuracy of the art:
More than 100 new and revised sketches will update the text and provide greater accuracy.
A new and updated set of blueprints is included with the new edition.
