From the Preface
Blueprint reading is a necessary skill for every participant in the construction industry. Whether you are a plumber, carpenter, roofer, electrician, flooring installer, or any other trade professional involved in the industry, it is crucial to have the skills necessary to read blueprints.
This book begins with the basic information and skills you need to read and understand blueprints. This material is the same whether you are reading foundation plans, HVAC plans, or any other type of plan. Everyone, regardless of specialty, should give special attention to Chapter One: Blueprint Basics.
Chapter Two and Chapter Three: Specifications and Architectural Drawings, respectively, are also of importance to everyone. Specifications complement almost every blueprint, while Architectural Drawings are necessary for almost all other pages in a set of blueprints.
Chapters Four through Chapter Eight cover special types of blueprints used for the primary specialty trades - structural, plumbing, mechanical and electrical.
Chapters Nine and Ten conclude this book with a detailed glossary and list of abbreviations used in the construction trades.
Naturally there may be some aspects of blueprint reading that I have not covered in sufficient depth for some readers. I will update this book on a continual basis and will attempt to include material suggested by readers as well as keep pace with developments in the construction industry.
