From the Preface
An electrician's apprentice, a journeyman wireman, an electrical engineer, or an electrical inspector will use the National Electrical Code daily. Their livelihood depends on their ability to properly install, design, and inspect electrical systems in accordance with the National Electrical Code.
The Applied Codeology text and associated lessons are designed to teach you how to use the National Electrical Code. This course is not "article" or "topic" specific. The National Electrical Code may seem confusing. In addition, the National Electrical Code changes every three years. A new apprentice may become overwhelmed with the amount of information in the National Electrical Code. Many electrical workers complete an apprenticeship and engineers complete college, yet neither may feel comfortable using the National Electrical Code.
The objective of this course is to give you the confidence in your ability to quickly find pertinent information in the National Electrical Code. To achieve this comfort level and genuine confidence in using the National Electrical Code, read and apply the methods outlined in this text along with completing the associated homework lessons.
An experienced tradesman can differentiate between members of different trades just by looking at the tools they carry. Electricians use hand tools, the most identifiable being side-cutting pliers. To an apprentice, a pair of side-cutters seems clumsy, but necessary. After a few years of field experience, those same side-cutters seem to be an extension of the hand, capable of many tasks, all of which are performed quickly and efficiently. If you invest the time that this course requires, and focus on the methods described within, the National Electrical Code will become a tool at your side that is just as comfortable and natural to use as your side-cutters.
