Description

This fundamental alternating current (AC) theory book, now in its second edition, offers a user-friendly approach and practical examples to keep you up-to-date. Designed to provide a thorough introduction to AC theory from its production, to its uses and circuitry; AC Theory, 2nd Edition, uses the basics of direct current theory to explain the various facets of AC theory. The book begins by covering the primary components of AC circuits, such as resistors, inductors, and capacitors. The chapters that follow build upon the basic principles learned in these chapters, gradually introducing increasingly complex topics such as applying AC principles in power generation and generators, parallel and combination circuits, and more. With updated sidebars that provide a real-world context for the topics covered, this book will help you develop strong connections between theory and applications, preparing you for work in the electrical field.

Features:
  • Coverage of molecules, ions, electrolytes, and a variety of other principles provide a strong foundation for practical electrical work.
  • Basic algebra and trigonometry are explained and used to provide the math skills needed to succeed in the field.
  • Complete, easy-to-follow explanations allow you to form strong connections between concepts and real-world practices.
  • Coverage of magnetism, AC generators, impedance in RCL series circuits, Lenz's law, Q of a coil, types of power, power factor, filters, and three-phase theory.
Efforts for continuous enhancement have produced this second edition of AC Theory, a technically precise and academically superior edition of AC Theory. Using a distinctive blend of theory-based explanation partnered with hands-on accounts of what to do in the field and peppered with Technical Tips and Field Notes, this book will lead you through the study of AC Theory, from DC fundamentals, to production of AC and identification of circuit parameters, to applications of AC in generators and transformers.
  • Running Glossaries are included in each chapter, along with a comprehensive Glossary at the end of the book.
  • High-Contrast Images give a clear and colorful view that "pops" off the page.
  • High-interest content is given in ThinkSafe!, FieldNote!, and TechTip! Sidebars to make real-world connections to lessons learned in the chapters.
  • New photos and illustrations are located near their text references and clarify explanations.
  • End-of-chapter problems reinforce critical concepts and relate to the worked-out examples in the chapter.
  • Step-by-step sample problems and solutions relate to the end of chapter exercises.
AC Theory, 2nd Edition, has been strengthened from top to bottom with many new features and enhancements to existing content. All-new chapter features provide structure and guidance for learners. Enhanced and concrete Chapter Objectives are complemented by solid and reinforcing Chapter Summaries, Review Questions, and Practice Problems. Chapter contents are introduced at the beginning of each chapter, and then bolstered before moving on to the next chapter. Throughout each chapter, concepts are explained from their theoretical roots to their application principles, with reminders about safety, technology, professionalism, and more.

AC Theory, 2nd Edition, has been expanded to more fully explore a number of concepts through a major reorganization of the chapters. Combining related topics and bolstering them with additional content makes the book even more reader-friendly. As the student progresses from basic electrical fundamentals learned in DC, the increased complexity of AC is added gradually to lead the student in a sequential process of adding components to create more complex circuits.

The fundamental theory of production of AC and identification of circuit parameters is used to build each additional chapter. The basic components of AC circuits are thoroughly explained; then each component is placed in a circuit to study the effects on the AC circuit. Calculations to verify circuit conditions are shown step-by-step to familiarize the students with the process and check results.

From the Preface
Welcome to the second edition of AC Theory, which has been redesigned and updated to provide knowledge of the fundamentals to electrical technologists in apprenticeship programs, vocational-technical schools and colleges, and community colleges. The text emphasizes a solid foundation of classroom theory supported by on-the-job hands-on practice. Every project, every piece of knowledge, and every new task will be based on the experience and information acquired as each technician progresses through his or her career. This book, along with the others in this series, contains a significant portion of the material that will form the basis for success in an electrical career.

This text was developed by blending up-to-date practice with long-lived theories in an effort to help technicians learn how to better perform on the job. It is written at a level that invites further discussion beyond its pages while clearly and succinctly answering the questions of how and why. Improvements to this edition were made possible by the continued commitment by the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) in partnership with Delmar Cengage Learning to deliver the very finest in training materials for the electrical profession.

For excellence in your electrical and telecommunications curriculum, look no further. The NJATC has been the source for superior electrical training for thousands of qualified men and women for over 65 years. Curriculum improvements are constant as the NJATC strives to continuously enhance the support it provides to its apprentices, journeymen, and instructors in over 285 training programs nationwide.

About the Author
Jeff Keijik has been involved in electrical technical education since 1978, when he began teaching post-secondary courses for the electrical construction and maintenance program at Dunwoody College of Technology. He was head of the Electrical department at Dunwoody from 1982 to 1998. During that time, Jeff also worked with local industry and many organizations to start an Electrical Design and Management program at Dunwoody. Jeff is a member of the Education Committee and is on the Board of Directors for the North Central Electrical League. He also serves on the Education Committee for the Minnesota Electrical Association. He has co-written many courses for National Electrical Code updates and exam preparation courses, and has written many textbooks on power generation and delivery and on motors and controls. Jeff is a graduate of Dunwoody College of Technology and has a Bachelors Degree from Metropolitan State University.
