Now updated to the 2006 International Building Code, this guide has been extensively revised and expanded to provide practical information about the 2006 International Building Code smoke control requirements to code officials and system designers.
The book provides an overview of smoke control and discusses rational analyses for smoke control systems, code-mandated smoke barriers, pressurization systems, smoke control using the airflow method, smoke control for atria and other large spaces, the equation method of analysis for atria and other large spaces, analysis of design fires, smoke control system equipment, the firefighter's smoke control panel, stairwell smoke protection, elevator shaft smoke protection, as well as special inspection and commissioning.
There are also appendices that address network modeling, zone fire modeling, computational fluid dynamics, analysis of stair pressurization systems, variable frequency drives, and flow areas in buildings. Appendix G contains a checklist for reviewing smoke control systems.
A Guide to Smoke Control in the 2006 International Building Code provides a greater understanding of the intent and application of Section 909 of the 2006 International Building Code. It discusses special inspection and the commissioning of smoke-control systems, and clarifies which fire-resistive barriers already required by the code (occupancy separations, exit elements, fire walls, floors, etc.) are intended or may be used as smoke barriers including guidance on the determination of design fires and discussion of the relationship of the International Building Code provisions to NFPA 92B.
Smoke Control Provisions of the 2006 International Building Code is intended to clarify the intent of the code by providing clear discussion of these topics in a reader-friendly style.
