The Pocket Guide to Residential Electrical Installations has been developed to provide a portable and practical comprehensive field reference source for electricians, contractors, inspectors, and others responsible for applying the rules of the National Electrical Code. Together with its companion volume, Pocket Guide to Residential Electrical Installations, the most widely applied general requirements of the NEC are compiled in these two extremely useful on-the-job, on-the-go documents.
The compiled requirements follow an order similar to the progression of an electrical system installation on the construction site, rather than the normal sequence of requirements in the NEC. Introductory chapters are followed by the requirements pertaining to temporary electrical installations. The Pocket Guide then continues with branch circuit, feeder, and service load calculation requirements from Article 220 and then proceeds into other general requirements extracted from Chapters 2,3, and 4 of the NEC.
Due to its compact size, the Pocket Guide does not contain all of the Code requirements and is a complement to, not a replacement of, the 2011 NEC. When paired with the entire volume of electrical safety requirements contained in the 2011 Code, the Pocket Guide is an effective tool that everyone concerned with safe electrical installations will want to have. In-depth explanations of NEC requirements are available. In NFPA’s National Electrical Code Handbook, the only NEC handbook with the entire text of the NEC, plus useful explanation and commentary developed by the NFPA staff.
Users of the Pocket Guide to Commercial and Industrial Electrical Installations must also understand that some adopting jurisdiction enact requirements to address unique local environmental, geographical, or other considerations. The highly specialized requirements contained in Chapters 5 through 8 of the Code are not included in this compilation, as this material is outside of the intended purposes of this document. The requirement included in the Pocket Guide are those that apply to virtually all commercial and industrial electrical installations are based on a practical working knowledge on how a commercial and industrial electrical construction project evolves from beginning to completion. As indicated above, however, the Pocket Guide is not intended to be a substitute for the NEC itself, which should always be consulted before full Code compliance.
