From the Preface
The design and regulation of buildings for safety is based on comprehensive requirements of the building code and other related codes, such as the fire and mechanical codes. Designers and code officials, in their important daily activities, rely upon and use provisions from multiple codes. The ICC family of International Codes, the I-Codes, consists of 14 codes, each regulating a specific subject, containing comprehensive, modern and up-to-date performance and prescriptive provisions.
The definitions chapter of each of the I-Codes, Chapter 2, refers the code user to definitions from other I-Codes, if a term is not defined. The International Building Code (IBC) Section 201.3, for example, reads: "Terms defined in other codes. Where terms are not defined in this code and are defined in the International Fuel Gas Code, International Fire Code, International Mechanical Code or International Plumbing Code, such terms shall have the meanings ascribed to them as in those codes." As such, in many cases, the user is required to navigate through multiple Codes for definitions, tables and figures.
This ICC QuickFinder book is designed and intended to assist the users by collecting all needed and related definitions, and other regularly needed tables and figures, used in all of the family of I-Codes in one easy to find and user friendly central document. Definitions from all 14 I-Codes listed below, and numerous tables and figures have been collected in this publication. There has been a long recognized need for such a compilation.
Definitions have been assembled from the International Building Code, ICC Electrical Code Administrative Provisions, International Energy Conservation Code, International Existing Building Code, International Fire Code, International Fuel Gas Code, International Mechanical Code, ICC Performance Code, International Plumbing Code, International Private Sewage Disposal Code, International Property Maintenance Code, International Urban-Wildland Interface Code and International Zoning Code. |
